I’m a travel-addicted, book-devouring, caffeine-guzzling, wannabe feminist/activist, part-time primary school teacher and full-time mother. I decided to start this feminist family travel blog for my daughter. Read more about me and her below!

Next up: Rhino / Da / Dad

This pretty damn awesome Welsh rugby-loving clever clogs is the father of my totally amazing/really irritating children (see below). He’s a total travel addict like me – we met in a hostel in Bolivia and have been to about 80 countries together so far! Unfortunately, he’s not a fierce feminist yet… Every feminist travel blog needs a challenge, right?!

Next up: H

I’d like to introduce you to my absolutely incredible first-born son, H. This little dude (he’s 4 years old) is a fantastic traveller and has tales to tell from Kosovo to Kingston, Jamaica. However, like his father, he ain’t no feminist YET! Yep, we’re talking pirates, dinosaurs, diggers and even running away from the ‘yucky girls’. So hey, every feminist travel blog needs two challenges right?!

Finally here’s: Zizi

Last but never least.

This feminist travel blog is for her.

Yep, World for a Girl is all about showing my sensitive but stubborn 2-year-old toddler daughter that yep, this world is for HER! This feminist travel blog is, more than anything else, my vehicle for empowering her through travel / the love of a family / a global education to believe in herself, to aspire to anything and to reach for the stars…and the peaks of mountains…the depths of the ocean… and further.

*And of course these aren’t their real names but yes they are their real-life nicknames!

The Travel Part

As I said my name is Kirsty. I’ve been exploring the world (on and off) for 15 years. I’ve visited over 101 countries and territories from Australia to Bolivia; China to Denmark; El Salvador to French Guiana all the way to Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Having kids hasn’t stopped me travelling either. H, my eldest had clocked up 20 countries before his fourth birthday and my youngest Zizi had flown across the Atlantic six times before she was 20 months old.

In previous lives, I’ve taught English in South Korea and Melilla (a Spanish enclave in Morocco); studied at university in Melbourne, Australia; tried to learn Spanish in Argentina and Barcelona; learnt to teach subordinate clauses in Ljubljana, Slovenia; pulled pints and made dorm beds in Dunedin, New Zealand; supported newly arrived immigrants in secondary schools in London; worked in an education consultancy and for almost 2 years, I ran the social media campaign of a ( sadly now defunct) travel resource charitable organisation called Gapaid. I did all the above without a man… and although I now happily have 2 men – my partner and son – and a daughter in my life I can’t wait to get out on some more adventures of my own.

The Feminism Thing – Why write a feminist travel blog?

This feminist travel blog is dedicated to little Zizi my daughter. It’s my way of saying

‘eh kiddo, you may not have a willy but you can be a warrior, an explorer, an adventurer, a strong, fiercely independent woman and I (your mother) well I’m going to do tonnes of research and soul-searching to give you the knowledge to totally BELIEVE that you are good enough, that you are equal and that every girl is‘.

There’s SO MUCH fantastic information out there on the web about awesome female explorers climbing mountains and sailing oceans, super travel groups supporting girls and women getting on the road, homeschooling feminists who want to teach their kids that we are 50% of the global population so yes we want 50% of the limelight on us and our record-breaking, stereotype-challenging achievements. I want to signpost these excellent women and organisations – get them noticed, get them talked about, followed and celebrated.

I want my son and daughter to know who the first women were who completed each travelling feat – and understand how it was just that little bit harder for her than it was for that oh-so-famous celebrity record-breaking bloke! And ultimately, you have to learn it, to teach it!

Secondly, in my feminist travel blog, I want to champion mums, moms and mamas who want to travel but whose feet are too stuck to the ground by ‘guilt glue’/ old gender stereotypes and provide inspiration, tips and resources for family adventures, solo mum travel and mother-daughter learning expeditions.
